Together we are driving forward the reduction of carbon emissions in the steel industry by using scrap produced by us in Gresten for recycling in the voestalpine steelworks in Linz.
Steel scrap is generated during every production process; when the large steel strips are split into the desired widths, when holes are made in the profiles or when they are cut into the desired lengths. But what happens to this scrap in the end?
We have a long-standing partnership with voestalpine, because the global steel and technology group is a supplier of a wide range of steel grades at its Linz site, which we process.
Scrap is required for steel production and voestalpine is already leading the way here with a proportion of 25%. However, the green transformation will further increase the demand for high-quality recycling material in the future.
The recently signed contract between voestalpine, Johann Neumüller GmbH (which shreds and sorts the steel scrap) and our company stipulates that all of the scrap that we produce in Gresten will be delivered exclusively to voestalpine. The quantities involved are between 20,000 and 30,000 tons per year.
The scrap is transported off site by rail, in order to achieve the maximum degree of sustainability while minimizing traffic on the surrounding roads. Up to 10 wagons leave our plant in Gresten every week. This means that between 30 and 35 fewer truck transports are required per week, thanks to rail transportation. Over the course of a year, this would save up to 1700 discrete truck transports.
